Park City's Ski Season Opens Before the Parking Bill Does

November 5, 2026

Last month, enclosed gondola cabins made test laps through a new terminal near the Frostwood Drive roundabout. Each cabin holds up to 10 people and has floor-to-ceiling windows. This is the Canyons Village Skyway, which replaces the Cabriolet. The Cabriolet was the open-air lift that carried Canyons skiers from the parking lot to the base area for nearly three decades, and it made its final run on March 29. TownLift reported the first test laps on October 21, 30 days before Park City Mountain's target opening day.

The gondola is the most visible change. The bigger change for anyone driving to the lifts this winter is the calendar. Park City Mountain is aiming to open Friday, November 20. Paid parking at Mountain Village, Deer Valley's opening and the new Canyons garage all land about two weeks after that. Those opening days are the cheapest and simplest stretch of the season to park at either base area.

On opening day, both base areas park free

The Park Record reported the November 20 target back in August. Like every early-season date, it depends on snow and conditions. If the mountain opens on schedule, here's how parking works at each base when the season starts.

Mountain Village keeps its reservation system, but at no charge. Park City Mountain's parking and transportation page says every Mountain Village lot is free from November 20 through December 4, and you still need an advance reservation seven days a week. A reservation holds your spot until noon. After 12 p.m., all lots are free and you don't need a reservation.

Canyons Village runs on surface lots until the garage opens. The resort says the Canyons Village Parking Structure will open in early December, once the final phase of construction wraps up. Until then, parking is free in surface Lots 2, 3 and 4, and those lots close once the garage opens. Signs and attendants will direct cars, and shuttles or walking routes connect the lots to the upper village.

That makes the opening weeks a good time to try the new arrival setup before it costs anything.

December 5 changes the drive to every lift at once

Free Mountain Village reservations end Friday, December 4. Here's what changes starting Saturday, December 5:

November 20 to December 4 Starting December 5
Mountain Village surface lots Free, reservation required $29 per day, reservation required, through April 3
Mountain Village carpools of four or more Free, reservation required Free reserved carpool parking
Any Mountain Village lot after noon Free, no reservation Free, no reservation
Canyons Village Free in surface Lots 2, 3 and 4 until the garage opens Garage, scheduled for early December, at $29 per day
Deer Valley Not yet open Opening day, conditions permitting

The Canyons garage is scheduled for early December, so the Canyons switch could come a few days before or after the Mountain Village one. Either way, in early December both Park City Mountain base areas go from free to $29 a day for a car that arrives before noon with fewer than four people. The Mountain Village garage costs $50 with a reservation, according to TownLift.

Canyons gets a new front door

Since April, when the resort announced the garage rate, the $29 figure has drawn most of the attention. What's changing physically at Canyons matters just as much on a regular weekday morning.

The new five-level Canyons Village Parking Structure sits near S.R. 224 and the Frostwood Drive roundabout. TownLift reports that it replaces the old cluster of surface lots with one arrival point holding more than 1,800 spaces. Here are the terms from the resort's 2026/27 plan:

  • $29 per day
  • Free after 12 p.m.
  • Free carpool areas for vehicles with four or more people, when space allows
  • A Winter Season Parking Pass for garage access
  • Limited free, first-come, first-served day-skier parking in the surface lot next to the garage

KPCW reported that winter garage season passes cost $825 and still require reservations.

The Skyway connects the garage to the base area. Like the Cabriolet, it's free to ride. It also adds a mid-station stop, which gives mid-village homeowners and lodging guests direct gondola access for the first time. If you live or host guests in the middle of Canyons Village, the walk to the lift may be shorter this winter than the Cabriolet ever made it. Park City Mountain's hours of operation page lists Skyway hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the operating period of November 20, 2026, through April 19, 2027.

The free routes around the paid lots

Once December 5 passes, the $29 charge mostly applies to one kind of trip: a car with fewer than four people pulling in before noon. The resort's own guidance lists several ways to skip it.

Ecker Hill Park-and-Ride is open seven days a week, and High Valley Transit serves it. The 10X High Line goes straight to Canyons Village. The 101 Spiro / 224 Local stops at both Canyons Village and Mountain Village. High Valley Transit runs its fixed routes and microtransit fare-free. If you're driving in from the Salt Lake side, the resort says to use the Jeremy Ranch exit.

Richardson Flat Park-and-Ride is also open daily, with Park City Transit service. The resort suggests it as a place to meet your carpool, so you can drive the last stretch as a group of four and use the free reserved carpool parking at Mountain Village. High Valley Transit lists 650 spaces at Richardson Flat and 34 at the Kimball Junction Transit Center. HVT and Park City Transit both serve Kimball Junction.

The resort also lists Park City High School as a winter-only parking option.

Noon is a free option on its own. Every Mountain Village lot and the Canyons garage are free after 12 p.m. That's a real option for anyone who can ski an afternoon block around work.

The city's buses are getting attention this winter too. TownLift reported in October that Park City Transit is building its 2026/27 winter schedule from historical, time-of-day travel data so it better reflects congestion and keeps delays on one route from spilling into the next. The City Council paused the proposed 10-Pink route to Quinns Junction for future consideration. A bigger change is further away: the Park Record reports that full Bobsled Express bus rapid transit service is expected to launch in 2028.

For lot status on any morning, the resort sends text alerts to anyone who texts PARK to (435) 244-7169. It also posts updates at @pcmtnalert on X.

Deer Valley opens the same day the parking changes

December 5 is also Deer Valley's opening day, conditions permitting. The resort is adding Hail Peak Express this season, which brings 200 skiable acres and seven runs and takes Deer Valley to 4,500 acres. Deer Valley says the East Village skier-services lodge and Park Peak Lodge will open in winter 2027/28, so they aren't part of this season.

Families have another reason to mark that first week. Deer Valley's Kids Ski Free promotion runs December 5 through December 11, 2026, with free daily lift tickets for children 12 and under. Kids still need a valid Deer Valley ticket to ride the chairlifts. The resort is also adding a family-oriented snow-feature zone near Pioche Express this season.

So on December 5, Park City Mountain switches to paid parking and Deer Valley opens with new terrain and a week of free kids' tickets. If your household skis both resorts, that first December week may be the easiest time to start at Deer Valley.

Opening day to December 5, off the mountain too

The same stretch fills up in town. Dates come from the Park Record community calendar and the Park City Library:

  1. Nov. 13 to 15: Toy Swap at the Park City Library.
  2. Nov. 19 to Dec. 6: The library's holiday-letter project.
  3. Fri., Nov. 20: Park City Mountain's target opening day. That evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., CREATE PC holds the launch party for its Holiday Makers Market. Habitat for Humanity hosts its holiday-tree show and auction at the same time, 21 and over with an RSVP required.
  4. Sat., Nov. 21: Habitat's public tree open house runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with Santa from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  5. Fri., Nov. 27: Gallery MAR on Main Street opens its Geoffrey Gersten exhibition, 6 to 9 p.m.
  6. Sat., Dec. 5: Deer Valley's opening day, the first day of paid Mountain Village parking, and Swaner's Wild Winter Art Market with local artists from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On November 20, you can ski on opening day, park free at either base and still make it to the Habitat tree show or the CREATE PC launch party that evening. By December 5, those free mornings are over.
